ULTRA-HIGH NET WORTH - ARE YOU SICK OF K1s?

By Greg Poapst · December 15, 2021

The term Ultra-high net worth ("UHNW") is a term for individuals with more than $30 Million in net worth, however it generally is used more fluidly for affluent investors with significant investment holdings (think above $10 Million).

There are varying degrees of sophistication among those individuals in this category, but a large amount of the UHNW crowd made their money running and building businesses. Generally, those individuals want control over their assets and prefer to manage it themselves or as a smaller family office. Managing these investments themselves may seem easy, as they generally are used to doing due diligence and invest in alternative funds as well as their own trading accounts and/or through a financial advisor.

On the alternatives side, if they truly want to diversify into 20+ investments they may find themselves dealing with more paperwork and tax forms then they know what to do with. One of the most annoying parts of investing into these types of alternatives is undoubtedly the Tax form K1s. If they invest in one or two alternatives and provide the K1s to their accountant its usually not too bad, but once you get a dozen or more per year, it can be a daunting task to keep up with.

For these individuals, they can transfer their assets and make new investments through a SERIES fund like Fundviews, where Fundviews manages all of the performance reporting, giving them a 1000 foot view of their portfolio of alternatives, as well as full transparency. We aggregate all K1s into a single K1 for the individual. But most importantly, the UHNW maintains full control, and can still dictate the investments as the designated investment manager on the structure, while Fundviews' Operations team helps execute transactions and manage capital calls.

The UHNW can also allow other family members or close friends to invest alongside them in the structure easily and build their own institutional fund offering. What was once exclusively for largely family offices, is now attainable at a much smaller level through efficient outsourcing and partnerships.
